A Case of Hereditary Elliptocytosis with Hemolytic Anemia


Abstract
Hereditary elliptocytosis is a clinically benign disease characterized by the presence of more than 25 % elliptical red cells and an autosomal dominant mode of inheritance. A minority of this disorder(probably 10-20 %) have hemolysis. The
40-year-old
female patient was admitted due to hepatitis. The 53% elliptical red cells were noted on her peripheral blood smear. On the other laboratory tests, there were evidences of hemolytic anemia. Her one younger sister and three of six daughters showed
elliptocytosis on their peripheral blood smears without symptoms. The author report a case of hereditary elliptocytosis with hemolytic anemia.
